　　幼い頃実母に捨てられ、御茶屋の女將（三益愛子）の養女として育てられたたみこ（三田佳子）は、色街の空気になじめないまま、高校生の身で蕓者に仕立てあげられてしまう。その後、彼女は遊女と蔑視されないよう懸命に働き、いつか戀人（梅宮辰夫）とともにこの世界を脫出しようと健気に働くのだが、そんな希望はことごとく打ち破られていき……。　　川野彰子の同名小説を原作に、これが第2作となる佐藤純彌監督が描く文蕓映畫。人間を絶えず冷徹に見つめつつも、恵まれない人生を迎えざるをえなかった者たちに対して哀歓のエールを送る姿勢は、佐藤監督作品全般に底通する要素だが、本作でもそれは見事に発露した秀作に仕上がっている。ヒロイン三田佳子のはかなくも凜とした姿も印象的。（増當竜也）
