故事發生在1943年，德軍統治下的羅馬尼亞，德軍伍爾曼上校（尤爾根 ;普洛斯諾 J uuml;rgen Prochnow 飾）帶領一隊士兵到達羅馬尼亞的某個小村莊，駐軍在一個古老的碉堡中，不久后，這些士兵卻一個一個離奇死亡，兇手還在尸體旁邊刻下了神秘的古老文字，于是德軍將一個猶太籍的中古歷史學家庫拉博士（伊安 麥克萊恩 Ian McKellen 飾）從集中營放出來，協助伍爾曼上校調查此事。庫拉博士發現兇手是困在碉堡中的一個遠古邪靈，他吸取人類的生命力，以維持自己的力量，于是庫拉與邪靈達成協議，只要邪靈能摧毀希特勒的軍隊，那么他就將邪靈從碉堡中放出。此時，一個希臘人葛萊肯（斯科特 ;格林 Scott Glenn 飾）特地來到了小村落，他決定不惜任何代價阻止庫拉博士將邪靈釋放，因為一旦邪靈恢復自由，他的詛咒將會危害全人類
