為了保持家族的榮耀，貴族們將自己的女兒送入修道院，以修身養(yǎng)性。這些修女們都出身于佛羅倫薩最富有的家庭，她們心懷對(duì)外界的渴望，卻被投入了修道院這個(gè)牢籠之中。她們強(qiáng)烈反對(duì)父母的不公平對(duì)待，只能在愛情中尋求安慰。因此，修女們?cè)O(shè)法滿足自己的欲望。 年老的修女院長試圖阻止修女們沉溺于欲望之中，但是禁令無法起到實(shí)質(zhì)性的作用，因?yàn)樾夼畟兯较吕锎蠖喽加凶约旱那槿恕Ｔ洪L會(huì)在修女們不在房間的時(shí)候進(jìn)行搜查，一旦發(fā)現(xiàn)與上帝不忠的跡象，就會(huì)對(duì)她們進(jìn)行懲罰。大部分修女都很年輕，對(duì)修道院的生活感到厭倦，日常生活單調(diào)無味。因此，禁欲和清規(guī)戒律引發(fā)了她們內(nèi)心的仇恨，最終導(dǎo)致了悲劇的發(fā)生。
