賈寶玉（張國榮飾）是賈府唯一的男丁，在一幫表姐妹和丫鬟的環繞之下，寶玉自然習得了四處沾花惹草的習性。寶玉終日流連于美色之間，可謂是萬花從中過片葉不沾身，唯有一名女子能夠占據他的內心，那就是體弱多病多愁善感的林黛玉（黃杏秀飾），無奈賈家人更中意能夠出得廳堂入得廚房的大家閨秀薛寶釵（沈杏妮飾）。為了撮合寶玉和寶釵，計謀多端的王熙鳳（張玲飾）想出了偷梁換柱的詭計。洞房花燭之夜，寶玉滿心歡喜以為自己迎娶的是黛玉，沒想到紅蓋頭底下坐著的，卻是寶釵，而此時，以為慘遭拋棄的黛玉郁郁寡歡而死。心碎之中，寶玉不顧家人的阻撓，削發為僧，最終詭異了佛門。
