民國初年，腐朽的清政府被革命推翻，民主進步的思潮迅速席卷整個神州大地。然而時局混亂加之民智未開，愚昧落后和封建迷信依然充斥著那個年代的中國。 民國警察王之章的兒子因鴉片而亡，他痛恨舊社會犯罪橫行，封建思想荼毒百姓。為此，他偽裝成道士潛入當地商人陳老爺家調查鴉片走私案件，期間卻遇到離奇的連環殺人案，看似是妖魂作祟，實則是有人暗中操作。王之章明察秋毫、抽絲剝繭，逐漸將案件真相還原，最終揭開封建迷信操弄人心的把戲，不僅抓住了兇手，還搗毀了陳老爺的鴉片倉庫，還“太平鎮”一片安寧。
