電影將《羅生門》中類似的殺夫事件置放在中國明朝，女主人公阿嬰出生在一個封建家族，父親是一縣知府，幼年時母親因不守婦道被凌遲處死。類似于牌坊和長老族群的包圍攻唾棄下，阿嬰曾目睹這個慘劇。不管這種陰影是否被抹煞，阿嬰似乎繼續著婦道和倫常。阿嬰與武舉丈夫新婚半月，返家探望知縣阿爹。在半路歇息，后發生了武舉被害，阿嬰失蹤的懸疑事件。身為知縣的父親令下屬兩位官差緝拿兇手，追尋失蹤的阿嬰。隨著目擊者一個買貨郎的落網，隨帶抓到了疑犯強盜雄艷，并找到阿嬰
