他的母親和自己的表弟相戀，由于近親不能結(jié)婚，所以被迫嫁給了一位商人。奧斯卡是誰(shuí)的孩子只有他母親知道。在他三歲生日那天，母親送了他一面鐵皮鼓。奧斯卡十分喜歡，整體掛在脖子上敲。 一天，奧斯卡躲到桌子底下玩的時(shí)候發(fā)現(xiàn)了母親與舅舅的秘密，他認(rèn)為大人世界充滿了欺騙，于是決定不再長(zhǎng)大。當(dāng)奧斯卡從樓上跳下時(shí)，奇跡發(fā)生了，他從此不再長(zhǎng)高，身高永遠(yuǎn)只有三歲的水平！ 奧斯卡還意外獲得了一種神秘的能力――高分貝的尖叫。當(dāng)看到母親與舅舅幽會(huì)時(shí)，他會(huì)爬上鐘樓，用尖叫震碎所有玻璃；當(dāng)老師責(zé)罵他時(shí)，他的尖叫震壞了老師的眼珠。奧斯卡維持著三歲的身高水平慢慢長(zhǎng)大。
